Mitochondria-targeting peptide researched for cellular energy, cardiac function, and age-related decline.
SS-31 (elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeting peptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane and binds cardiolipin, a lipid essential for efficient energy production. By stabilizing cardiolipin it helps mitochondria make ATP more cleanly and reduces damaging reactive oxygen species.
Because failing mitochondria are central to aging and to many diseases of the heart, muscle and nervous system, SS-31 has been studied in real clinical trials for heart failure, mitochondrial myopathies and certain eye conditions — giving it more legitimate research backing than most longevity peptides.
Results have been mixed across indications, but the mechanism is sound and the safety profile so far is reasonable, with injection-site reactions being the most common issue.
Improves the efficiency of energy production and reduces oxidative stress.
Clear mechanism; clinical-trial tested across several conditions
Studied for heart failure and mitochondrial myopathy.
Human trials with mixed but informative results
Targets a root mechanism of aging (mitochondrial decline).
Mechanistically compelling; long-term healthspan data still developing
We rate every peptide honestly across four dimensions — and tell you what it's not.
Promising but early. Strong animal data and/or small/preliminary human studies, not yet confirmed in robust trials.
Men focused on energy, performance and longevity at the cellular level
Injection-site reactions are the main side effect. One of the better-researched longevity peptides, but not a proven anti-aging cure.
Women targeting energy and healthy aging
No hormonal interactions reported; female-specific data limited. Avoid in pregnancy.
No known hormonal interactions; female data limited.

Injection-site reactions are the most common effect.
Emerging compound — long-term human data is still accumulating.
Standardized data for SS-31 (Elamipretide) is limited. These are the general effects to watch for with this type of compound.
Rotate sites, use sterile technique, let alcohol dry before injecting.
Hydrate and ease the dose; usually transient as your body adjusts.
Individual responses vary. Stop and consult a clinician for severe, persistent, or unexpected reactions.
