What It Is

Oxytocin is a natural hormone and neurotransmitter — the so-called bonding or love hormone — central to social connection, trust, empathy, intimacy and childbirth/lactation. Synthetic oxytocin is a long-established medicine in obstetrics.

As a research peptide it is used intranasally to reach the brain, where studies have explored effects on social behavior, trust, mood, stress reduction and intimacy. The effects tend to be subtle and strongly context-dependent rather than dramatic.

It is generally well tolerated, but because it can stimulate uterine contractions it must be avoided in pregnancy, and effects on mood and social behavior are nuanced rather than guaranteed.
