What It Is

LL-37 is the only human cathelicidin — a natural antimicrobial host-defense peptide that is part of your innate immune system. It punches holes in bacterial membranes, disrupts biofilms, signals the immune system and supports wound healing.

Researchers are interested in it precisely because it attacks microbes physically rather than chemically, which makes resistance harder to develop — relevant for stubborn infections and biofilm-related problems where conventional antibiotics struggle.

It is a double-edged molecule: dysregulated LL-37 is implicated in some inflammatory skin conditions (like rosacea), so it can irritate, and it should be approached cautiously — especially by anyone with autoimmune disease.

What People Use It For

Antimicrobial / Biofilm

Disrupts bacteria and biofilms that resist standard antibiotics.

Well-characterized mechanism; mostly preclinical for therapeutic use

Wound Healing

Supports closure and defense of wounds.

Preclinical and mechanistic support

Immune Signaling

Modulates innate immune responses.

Documented mechanism; clinical use experimental

How Strong Is the Evidence?

We rate every peptide honestly across four dimensions — and tell you what it's not.

Experimental

Mostly preclinical (animal/in-vitro) evidence with a clear mechanism. Human effects are largely anecdotal.
